Bell, Charles Robert

Charles Robert Bell, 67, a loving husband, dad and papa, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, Nov. 6, 2008. Funeral: 2 p.m. Tuesday in White's Chapel of Memories. Interment: Clark Cemetery, Parker County. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Charles Robert Bell was born June 24, 1941, in Weatherford, the son of the late Charles Perry and Ruth Luckett Bell. He lived his whole life in and around Weatherford after graduating from Aledo schools. Family was a large part of his life as evidenced by his selfless act of forgoing a college scholarship so that he could run the family dairy while his dad was incapacitated. His devotion to his family was rewarded because during this time he met his future bride, the former Shirley Wilson of Weatherford. They met and he informed her that they would soon be married. They were married July 15, 1961. Charles soon went to work for General Motors, where he retired at the age of 52, after nearly 30 years of service. During these 30 years, he became a father but he was also a farmer, rancher and, among other things, a Little League coach. Sports and kids were a big part of his life. As a Little League coach in Aledo, he didn't always win, because he didn't draft the most talented players but the kids with the biggest hearts and who gave the most; he made sure that everyone felt like a winner. This was evidenced later when he became involved with the Parker County Livestock Improvement Association. He worked for many years, with his final jobs being general superintendent of the livestock show and announcer for the show and sale for 10 years. His family would either buy or donate money to help the kids who didn't receive what was determined as a fair price for their sale animal. He would even buy the floor of the non-sale sheep so that the kids would receive above-market price for their efforts with their animals. Charles was also past president of the American Association of Sheriff's Posse and Riding Clubs. He was a member and deacon at New Faith Baptist Church. Charles was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Taylor Bradshaw Bell; parents; and a sister, Evelyn Murphy. Survivors: Wife, Shirley Bell of Weatherford; daughter, Pam Barksdale and husband, Eric, of Brock; son, Chuck Bell and wife, Robin, of Granbury; twin granddaughters, Bailey and Alli Barksdale; grandson, Brandon Bell; granddaughter, Payton Bell; sisters, Barbara Spann and husband, John, of Weatherford and Elaine Towles and husband, Ken, of Aledo; numerous nieces and nephews; a loving church family; and a host of friends.

Lowry, Glenn

GLENN LOWRY died peacefully at Houston Hospice on November 7, 2008, never regaining consciousness five days after a thrombolytic stroke. Born June 1, 1934 in Baytown, Texas to E.A. " Doc" Lowry and Nona Lowry, he is preceded in death by his parents and tragically his younger son Peter Lowry. His son Colin Lowry, daughter-in-law Andrea Ariel, grandson Brandon Ariel, sister Doris Kraft, brother-in-law Charles Kraft, niece Jamie Kraft and nephew Lowry Kraft survive him. After graduating from Cedar Bayou High School and Sam Houston State University, he then served 2 years in the army. He worked as a writer for the Humble Bee, sports editor for the Baytown Sun, in public relations for the National Cotton Council in Memphis/New York City and as a stockbroker for Paine Webber/UBS where he retired after 30 years. In Memphis, he appeared in a play called "Separate Tables," where he met Beverly Fey who became his wife for 30 years. The family moved to Houston in 1965 and then to San Marcos, Texas in 1982. Glenn's generosity, intelligence, sense of humor, communication skills and passion for other people's needs touched many lives in numerous communities. He freely gave financial advice often refusing to take a commission when that advice was fruitful. If Glenn knew you liked or needed something, he would get it for you. On Sundays he took the New York Times business section to one person, the magazine section to someone else, the book review to a third and picked-up croissants for the children at the Park IV condos where he lived. In the aftermath of Hurricane Ike, he excelled at procuring ice, leaving extra bags for his friends at the Park IV. He loved horses and worked tirelessly to make pari-mutuel horse racing legal in Texas in the 1970s. He regularly traveled all over the country to the Breeder's Cups races including last month at Santa Anita in Arcadia, California. He wrote a weekly e-mail column based upon his observations and comments about life, politics, finance and more called "Musings". When told he should create a blog instead of attaching a document to e-mail, he said "I don't want to create a blog, I want people to get Musings whether they want it or not". Glenn was an incredibly active, independent 74 year-old who routinely played golf, worked out at the gym and the pool. His only health complaints were bum knees, a stiff shoulder and allergies. He joked that all he wanted written in his obituary was "he doesn't itch any more." During the viewing at his father's funeral, he quietly whispered in his sister's ear "Don't you wish we weren't strong enough to handle this?" In accordance with Glenn's wishes, the sole memorial event will be a celebration of life at 1902 West Lamar at Taft in Houston, Texas on November 15, 2008 at 5pm. Send an e-mail for more information to colin@linedashmedia.com. In lieu of flowers, send donations to the The Peter Lowry Family Assistance Fund, TNFF, 1717 Main Street Suite 1800, Dallas, TX 75201 or Houston Hospice, 1905 Holcombe, Houston, TX 77030-4123 or donate to your favorite charitable organization.

McLemore, Lee

Houston's first `City Councilman Emeritus', LEE McLEMORE, age 93, passed away on the 6th of November 2008. He was one of Houston's most dedicated and energetic citizens for civic and political service. Lee lived and worked by his creed; "There is a destiny that makes us brothers. No one goes his way alone. All we cast into the lives of others come back into our own." Lee was born June 6, 1915 in the foothills of Hickman County, Tennessee. When he was three years old his family moved to Nashville where he attended public school through to Grade 7. His education was halted when his family moved to Kansas City, MO for his mother's health. Shortly thereafter, his mother died and it was necessary for him to seek employment. At the age of 15, having a knack for art and lettering, Lee became a commercial artist Three years later, while working for the theatres, he met Walt Disney, who admired his drawings of Mickey Mouse and other cartoons. Walt Disney offered him a position in his California Studio. With the letter of Employment in his hand and his sign kit, he headed for California. It was the 17th of February 1936, and the ice and snow made the traveling unbearable. It was in Dallas, Texas where he searched for a warmer route to California. Someone suggested that he go south on HWY 75 to Houston, Texas. He had never heard of Houston, but took the advice. The next day was shinning bright and all the Houstonians he met were friendly. Out of funds, and quite taken with his welcoming town, Lee delayed his journey and quickly found a job. Houston had a new and energetic citizen. In 1939 he established his own company. "The Houston Kolor-Ad Co." was born, where Lee sold signs and displays. In 1941, as a private pilot, he was charter member of the Gulf Coast Flying Club. The Club later became a wing of the Houston Civil Air Patrol. In 1942 he entered the Army Air Force and served as a public relations photographer under General Doolittle's command on Okinawa. Returning to Houston in 1945, Lee started real estate development business and continued with his civic work. He became a member of the Houston Junior Chamber of Commerce in 1940 and served in many capacities, including Director, Secretary, and President. In 1950 he was voted "Houston's Outstanding Young Man" by the Houston Chamber of Commerce. In 1951 Texas Governor Allen Shivers named him one of "the Five Outstanding Young Texans". The year 1952, brought a new challenge for Lee. A group of Houston businessmen urged him to run for Houston City Council. With their support, he was elected to District "C" with a large majority. He was re-elected as City Councilman for 10 consecutive terms from 1952 to 1972. During his twenty years of service as Councilman to the City of Houston Lee, served as Mayor Pro-Tem, serving under four Mayors: Oscar Holcome, Roy Hofheinz, Lewis Cutrer and Louie Welch. He was elected Secretary and then President to the Houston-Galveston Area Council, serving eleven Counties, and he chaired many committees: Aviation (during his term the Bush Intercontinental Airport was built). Early in his career as Mayor Pro-Tem McLemore flew to Kansas to invite Bernard Calkins to bring his air-condition business to Houston. He also spearheaded the effort through the State Capitol to create what is known as Lake Conroe, Lake Livingston, and the Wallaceville Reservoir. The City record will also show his ongoing support for the Beautification of Buffalo Bayou. He was instrumental in naming Allen Parkway for the founders of our City. Lee was awarded a lifetime membership to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and was appointed Marshall for the Salt Grass trail ride for 11 consecutive years. Lee also gave his time as either a member or officer for the United Fund, Lighthouse for the Blind, Youth fair Rodeo, Harris County Historical Society, American Legion Post 560 for 49 years, Mayor and Councilman Association, 147th fighter group, Houston Advertising Council, Boy Scout Advisory Council, and Charter member of the Big Brothers and Sisters Organization.
